CBD (Cannabidiol) as an herbal alternative has the potential to improve health and treat some illness such as anxiety, depressions, insomnia and many other ailments.
Many people are still sceptical of CBD due to its association with marijuana, as such often tend to associate the side effects of marijuana with CBD oil. This can easily be explained – the major difference between CBD oil (which is hemp-derived) and marijuana is in the content of THC.
Although CBD and marijuana come from the same cannabis plant the legal difference is in its THC content.
When you see a product such as CBD which is hemp-derived that means it contains 0.2% or less THC in the UK. Hemp-derived CBD of 0.2% THC or less is legal.
The World Health Organisation reports “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

How does CBD react or work in the human body?
The cannabinoids found in CBD interact with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of cannabinoids receptors responsible for maintaining balance in the body and regulate a number of functions including but not limited to sleep, mood, eating, metabolism, stress responses and immune functions
When ingested, CBD reacts with the anandamide and 2-AG endocannabinoids in the body. Anandamide is considered the responsible cannabinoid of bliss, joy, and happiness within the brain. CBD can also help stimulate and increase serotonin activity in the brain affecting the transmission of electrical activity as well as sleep, mood, concentration.
CBD is non-psychotropic and its reaction within the body helps produce a feel-good response. That’s what makes CBD very attractive to those looking to find a natural ‘green rush’, from the daily stressors of life.
Does CBD Oil make you sleepy?
The body’s response to CBD is to help in maintaining balance (homeostasis). CBD relaxes you mind, body, soul and spirit by slowing down the breakdown of anandamide facilitating a relaxed and calm state for better sleep.
Each person’s individual reaction to CBD can differ. Some factors to take into consideration are genetic, dosage, lifestyle and the type of CBD oil or CBD product being consumed.
CBD oil in itself is not a sedative and should not be consumed as such. CBD may help in slowing down the body’s stress response allowing for a deeper REM sleep to help you feel well-rested when you wake up.
Dosage is very important when it comes to CBD – for beginners we recommend starting of with lower doses and then gradually increase this following your body’s response.
A high dosage of CBD may increase the neurotransmitter Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) activity in the brain helping to induce calmness and relaxation that can help you fall asleep.
